Intersection safety debate continues in Waynesboro
WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Efforts continue to create a four-way stop for pedestrians at the intersection of East Main Street and East Second Street, but some town leaders are questioning why one wasn't already in place.
Washington Township (Pa.) Manager Mike Christopher said he found a 1996 letter from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation in which PennDOT agreed to stop all traffic for pedestrians.
However, new traffic signals have been installed along Pa. 16 (Main Street), including at the intersection with East Second Street/Mickley Avenue. That one doesn't include a four-way stop when pedestrians press a crossing button.
"Who did the study to get rid of the four-way?" Christopher asked.
The Borough of Waynesboro and Washington Township share the costs for maintenance of the traffic lights at that intersection. Re-configured traffic signal controllers are estimated to cost $1,300 on top of $2,000 for engineering.
The intersection is near the Waynesboro Area YMCA and several schools.
