Three charged with DUI at W.Va. sobriety checkpoint

KEARNEYSVILLE, W.Va. - The West Virginia State Police arrested four people for driving a vehicle with a revoked license and three people were charged with driving under the influence in a weekend sobriety checkpoint operation, 1st Sgt. E.D. Burnett announced Monday in a news release.

Officers issued a total of 26 citations and 35 warnings by the time 489 vehicles went through the checkpoint, which was staged along W.Va. 51 from 8 p.m. Saturday to 2 a.m. Sunday, Burnett said.

Seven motorists were cited for insurance violations and three were cited for speeding, Burnett said.

Police administered a total of eight sobriety tests during the checkpoint, according to the release.

Martinsburg man charged with possession of heroin

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - A 31-year-old man stopped by police early Monday for suspicion of loitering in front of the 7-Eleven store on West King Street in Martinsburg was found with several small straws of heroin, according to court records.

Arthur Lee Hairston, of no fixed address, was charged with one felony count of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, court records show. He was in Eastern Regional Jail Monday night on a $25,000 bond set by Berkeley County Magistrate JoAnn Overington, according to court and jail records. He was placed in jail at 5:30 a.m., according to jail records.

According to a complaint by Martinsburg Police Department Patrolman J.L. Harper, Hairston had at least 10 straws containing heroin in his possession, and five needles in his front left pants pocket. All but one of the straws were concealed in a folded $1 bill, according to Harper's complaint.

Hairston was convicted of distributing crack cocaine in August 2001, according to Harper's complaint.

Bloodhounds help in search for woman in Hagerstown

Authorities used a bloodhound to find a woman who wandered into the woods Monday near Professional Court in Hagerstown during an apparent suicide attempt, according to a press release from the Maryland State Police.

The woman overdosed on prescription medications and illegal drugs before she entered the woods Monday at about 4 p.m., the release said. She was found lying unresponsive about 100 yards into the woods near Antietam Creek and was taken to Washington County Hospital.

The woman's condition was unavailable late Monday.
