BOE job is challenging, but also gratifying

To the editor:

This Berkeley County Board of Education member will not be seeking re-election to our community's school board in January, when one must file for office.

My purpose for this early notification is to encourage candidates to seek this important seat of community service. You must pay $25 to the county clerk's office between Jan. 11 and 30, 2010. You must have a high school diploma or GED. There may be no more than two board members from any magisterial district on the five-person board. The four-year seat is nonpartisan and you are elected in the May 2010 primary election by all who vote.

Elected members must attend seven hours of annual training. You are paid by the board meetings that you attend and the present board has been very thrifty in consolidating the called number of meetings and hearings. You oversee the largest local county-level budget and the second largest school system in the state.

This challenging job offers many moments of gratification. My experience with my four other elected colleagues and their unheralded talents has been very positive. Our community continues to manifest its support for our students in countless actions and deeds. One also witnesses the unselfish compassion for our students from our professional and service staff at all levels.

I will personally miss the moments you hand high school graduates their diplomas. It is like reaching through a time warp and touching the future in that brief exchange.

The position is not an easy task in our rapidly growing county, but I know there are local citizens capable of meeting our community's challenges.

Please give our students and all who serve these children your consideration in running for the Berkeley County Board of Education. Thank you.

Patrick H. Murphy
member
Berkeley County Board of Education

Antrim Township supervisor thanks voters

To the editor:

I just wanted to take this opportunity to humbly thank the voters of Antrim Township for re-electing me to serve as a township supervisor.

I also wish to thank my wife, MaryAnn, and my family for their continued support and patience during the past two years that I've served as a supervisor.

I especially wish to thank the kind people at WPS Inc. for their help and support in printing my campaign materials; Pi-Rho Signs; Decals and More; Marty Boscolo of Mikie's Ice Cream and Sandwich Shop for kindly donating lunch for my campaign volunteers; and Brother's Pizza in Greencastle for their generous donation of pizza for those volunteers who worked tirelessly on my campaign.

I am truly grateful for the support and encouragement I've received from the voters of this great township. May God continue to bless our community and its residents.

Greencastle, Pa.

Bartlett needs to support health care change

To the editor:

To U.S. Rep. Roscoe Bartlett: I'm watching you, sir. I hope and pray you turn around and support health care change.

Enough greed is enough.
