Rams advance to WVIAC semis

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Amanda Hall had 15 kills and nine blocks to lead Shepherd to an 11-25, 25-21, 20-25, 25-20, 15-5 win over the University of Charleston (21-13) in the quarterfinals of the WVIAC Tournament on Thursday.

Kasey Mercier and Lauren Gardner each had 10 kills for the Rams (21-11), while Lauren Jeschelnik added 25 assists, Julie Robertson tallied 25 digs and Jane Thompson had 17 assists.

Shepherd will play Alderson-Broaddus (21-15) today at 5:30 p.m. in the tournament semifinals.

n Shepherd head coach Sarah Smith was selected as the WVIAC Coach of the Year, while Hall, a sophomore middle hitter, was named to the All-WVIAC first team and Emily McCoy was a second-team selection for the Rams. Robertson and Thompson were named honorable mentions and Gardner and Mercier were All-Freshman selections.

Shippensburg’s Spences honored

NEW ORLEANS — Shippensburg University’s Steve Spence was named the Atlantic Region Cross Country Coach of the Year for both men and women after his Red Raiders swept the team titles last weekend at the region championships.

His daughter, Ship sophomore Neely Spence, was named the region’s female runner of the year. She is undefeated this season.

The Red Raiders will compete in the NCAA Division II championships Nov. 21 at the University of Southern Indiana.

Level 7 — Jacey Fugate 9.15 vault (5th), 7.65 beam (7th), 8.65 floor (10th), 31.25 all-around; Casey Tucker 9.1 vault (8th), 8.2 floor, 28.85 all-around; Gabby Mazzone 8.75 vault, 7.1 bars, 8.85 floor (8th), 24.7 all-around.

Level 6 — Aubree Tiner 8.225 vault (7th), 7.65 bars (7th), 8.15 beam (7th), 7.35 floor (9th), 31.375 all-around (8th).

BRIEFS

Cheerleading clinic at Mont Alto

The Penn State cheerleading clinic will be held at the Mont Alto Campus on Jan. 31 from 1-5 p.m. Girls ages 4-18 may participate to learn cheers, jumps, tumbling and stunts. No prior experience is necessary.

Registration is $20 per individual and includes a T-shirt. To register or for more information, contact Mont Alto cheerleading coach Christina Yoder at 717-830-1223.

Chambersburg YMCA co-ed volleyball tournaments

The Chambersburg YMCA is hosting two co-ed volleyball tournaments. The ‘A’ Division tournament will be played Jan. 16 and the ‘B’ Division tournament will be played Jan. 23.
