DAYTON, Tenn. — Broadfording battled through the losers’ bracket all the way to the championship round before falling to Hearts for Jesus, of Cleveland, on Friday night at the National Association of Christian Athletes Division I Tournament.

Needing to defeat Hearts for Jesus twice to win the title, the Lions won the first match 25-23, 15-25, 16-14, but could not sustain the energy level needed to do it again and fell 25-18, 25-15.

Broadfording — which finished the season 22-0 in best-of-5 matches — went 15-11 in 26 games played at nationals from Wednesday through Friday. The Lions finished 4-4 in pool-play games, splitting with Calvary Calumet (25-24, 20-25) and Crossroads (25-19, 19-25), sweeping Cornerstone (25-19, 25-21) and getting swept by Community Christian (25-21, 25-21). Pool-play games were races to 25 that did not have to be won by two.

Broadfording earned the fifth seed entering double-elimination bracket play. In the winners’ bracket quarterfinals, the Lions defeated fourth-seed Crossroads 25-19, 25-15, but in the semifinals Broadfording fell to top-seed Calvary Calumet, 25-15, 19-25, 15-10.

The Lions began their run through the losers’ bracket with a 25-19, 25-15 win over Crossroads, then beat Cornerstone 25-15, 19-25, 15-11 in the semifinals before upsetting Calvary Calumet 25-22, 25-16 in the final to reach the championship round.

Danielle DuBois (138 digs) was named defensive MVP of the tournament, while Rebecca Adams (184 assists), Hannah Young (103 kills, 19 blocks, 107 digs) and Charlotte Worsfold (49 kills, 13 blocks) were named to the all-tournament team.

Adams signed to play for Bryan College in Dayton on Thursday. Bryan is an NAIA program.

W.Va. All-State teams

Several area players have been named to the West Virginia High School Soccer Coaches Association All-State teams.

Martinsburg has two players on the Class AAA boys first team — senior forward Gavin Washington and senior midfielder Aaron Anderson — while Washington junior defender Cole Cloonan is on the second team.

Jefferson senior midfielder Sarah Cogswell is on the Class AAA girls first team, while teammates Kiersten Chaney, a senior defender, and Kelsey Barnholt, a junior forward, are on the second team. Martinsburg senior forward Alaina Heck also is on the second team.

For the Berkeley Springs boys in Class AA-A, junior defender Jake Wise is on the first team, freshman forward Zach Wise is on the second team and senior defender Dylan Wash is an honorable mention.

Other honorable mentions include: Class AAA boys — Hedgesville’s Zack Brown and Patrick Dwyer; Jefferson’s Ryan Knight and Kyle Ransom; Martinsburg’s Evan Bobo and Adam Mauck; Musselman’s Tommy Frye; and Washington’s Matthew Robison and Zane Dial. Class AAA girls — Jefferson’s Melissa Taylor, Rachel Ransom and Kiersten Stukey; Musselman’s Rachel Coles, Laura Bridges and Rachel Sandstrom; Martinsburg’s Katrinia Durst, Jamie Hill and Kendall Bush; and Washington’s Katie Heubisch.

Mercersburg 11, Kiski 0

MERCERSBURG, Pa. — Carlos Garcia scored four goals as Mercersburg Academy finished its season with a rout of Kiski School on Saturday.

Joey Roberts had a goal and five assists for the Blue Storm (8-6-1), while Theron Binder, David Marshall and Jake Shorr each had a goal and an assist, Colin Reagan, Bill Flanagan, Alex Kelly and Taku Yamane each had a goal and Andy Chan added an assist.

Mercersburg’s Riford, Osman win MAPL titles

HIGHSTOWN, N.J. — Mercersburg Academy’s Mackenzie Riford and Neb Osman won the individual titles Sunday at the 12th annual Mid-Atlantic Prep League Championships.

Riford covered the 3.1-mile course in 19:34 to win the girls race, beating runner-up Kelly Bailey of host Peddie School by 8 seconds. Julia Simmons finished ninth in 21:41 for the Mercersburg girls, who finished third out of six teams.

Osman won by a fraction of second over Blair Academy’s Scott Chamberlin in 16:06. The third-place Mercersburg boys had two other runners in the top 10. Ellis Mays was sixth in 17:06, and Matt Cook was ninth in 17:15.

Martinsburg playoff tickets

Martinsburg will host Morgantown in a West Virginia Class AAA first-round game Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Cobourn Field.

Advanced sales tickets are $7 per adult and $5 per student. They will be on sale in Martinsburg’s athletic office today, Tuesday and Thursday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

All tickets are $7 at the gate. Gates will open at 6 p.m. Friday.

Greencastle playoff tickets

Greencastle-Antrim (7-2) will host Daniel Boone on Friday at Kaley Field at 7 p.m. in the first round of the PIAA District 3-AAA playoffs.

Advanced ticket prices are $5 for adults and $3 for students. All tickets at the gate will be $5. There will be no reserved seating for the game. Ticket gates will open at 5:30 p.m. Friday. No passes are accepted for the playoffs.

Advanced tickets will be sold at the high school main office on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Harrison qualifies for Boston

HARRISBURG, Pa. — Kay Harrison, 46, of Hagerstown, completed the Harrisburg Marathon in a personal-best time of 3 hours, 58 minutes, 5 seconds, qualifying for the Boston Marathon.

Byron 15K set for Dec. 12

The annual Goodloe E. Byron Memorial 15K Run will be held Dec. 12 at 9 a.m. in Emmitsburg, Md.

The race starts and ends at Echo Field at Mount St. Mary’s University.
