MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - The Berkeley County Commission on Thursday moved forward with a plan to use the proceeds of a $1.5 million bond issue to finish air-handling system upgrades and roof replacement work at the Dunn Building, which houses most of the county's administrative offices.
The roofing work, along with replacement of heating and cooling systems, is part of a $4.3 million contract the county has with W. Harley Miller Contractors Inc. of Martinsburg. The project is expected to be complete by Dec. 31.
The bond issue by the county's building commission is in addition to revenue left over from a $5.3 million bond issue that was approved in 2006 for renovations to the Dunn Building and architectural and engineering design work for the neighboring Crawford building, according to county officials.
Both buildings were once part of the Blue Ridge (retail) Outlet Center. The Dunn Building is at the corner of Stephen and Raleigh streets and is one of three historic, brick woolen mill buildings and adjoining parking lots that the county bought in May 2002 for $3.8 million.
The Dunn building houses the county's tax, planning and engineering departments, fire and ambulance boards, and administration, commission and assessor's offices. The first floor is the home of Blue Ridge Community & Technical College, which leases the space.
The Crawford Building, though still vacant, was designed for expansion of the county's judicial center, which opened to the public Dec. 4, 2006.
